Grace spent the rest of the afternoon painting a shade with oversized flowers for the president of the garden club. This is going to be a nice gift, Grace thought as she placed the shade on top of the lilac flowerpot base that Bella had finished wiring. She was turning it around, checking it for any flaws, when Michael came to take a closer look.

“That’s lovely!” he exclaimed. “You’ve been a quick study with these lampshades. Milo and Matt would be so proud of you. Well, I suppose I’d better call it a day, if I’m going to hang Sophie’s flyers around town. I do hope she finds her Stanley soon.”

“Me too.” Grace said. “Poor girl. She seems kind of lonely to me. She asked me if I thought she was fat when we went out to the car. I wonder if she has any friends her own age.”

“I don’t know. She’s always wandering around the town by herself. She seems like one of those kids who like to hang out with adults more than their own peers. I was like that myself, and I was chubby too. It’s hard to be an oversized kid,” Michael said knowingly.

Grace looked at Michael’s compact frame. “It’s hard to believe you were ever fat, Michael.”

Michael’s head twitched ever so slightly as he patted down his tie. “I work at keeping in shape. Fifty sit-ups every day and thirty minutes on my treadmill. One must exercise discipline. But if I shared my house with a baker like Sophie does, I’d be in big trouble.”

Bella emerged from her work area, pulling on her gloves. “I’m on my way out too. I think I need another soak in my tub. I’ll see you both tomorrow.”

Grace put away her paints and checked the back door. The Christmas tree, now beginning to dry out, had slid to the floor, untrimmed and forlorn. Tomorrow decorating would be her first priority. After all, there were only a few days left until the Village Stroll, and the shop wasn’t ready. She’d have to bring some decorations from home or find the time to go buy some new ones. Scrounging around in the attic for any M and M might have left behind was not something that she wanted to contemplate.

As if on cue, she heard scratching noises above her head. Michael stared up at the ceiling too, but stayed quiet. The shop needed so much attention, Grace thought. It was strange how something that happened to Danielle Whitney, a woman she scarcely knew, could affect everything she did or had to do.
